Rolex, Beyond the Flex

Let's start this off plain and simple there is no watch brand like Rolex. Beyond all the flex bros and Instagram idiots struggling with a sense of belonging needing to shove their expensive watch down your face, what is Rolex? Well I'm not going to sit here and give you the history that's gonna put you to sleep; instead I'm going to look at the psychology with the obsession. First we need to understand that the Rolex explosion happened with its dawn into the business world as the "you made it" watch, the watch the finance bros would purchase to show the lowly entry level what they will one day be. The watch these finance guys bought was almost always a Rolex Datejust and if they really were the top dog Rolex Day-Date.

So was birthed the idea of the Rolex Datejust and Day-Date became the "you made it" watch, what about the other 12 watches Rolex makes. Well Rolex has always been the master of marketing, they never wanted to sell you just a watch, they want to sell you the story of the watch. But the story is only as good as the person telling it. Enter the mastery of Rolex telling story's like they are damn Homer from ancient Greece. They weld their words and images with such power that the watch becomes intertwined with the story that birthed it. Take for example the Rolex Explorer, what's its purpose, its essentially an OP with some numbers on the dials. Well it fricken climbed Everest, and go on Rolex's Explorer page and they make that abundantly clear. Its never just about the watch with Rolex its always about the story. That's why I love Rolex. And sure Patek, AP, VC, and even Grand Seiko make better finished watches and just objectively better watches. But no watch in world tells as much of a story as any Rolex model. Truly, masters of psychology and marketing.
